Many story plot points are unknown in Tatsuki Fujimoto’s series Chainsaw Man. Stuff like why Kobeni is such a scaredy cat, why Denji has sharpened teeth, or why Aki needs to make hand signs to call the Fox Devil. One such story plot point is: why did Reze bite Denji’s tongue? Was it a spur-of-the-moment or all according to plan? I would say the latter.
There are a lot of theories floating out there made by fans, and we are no exception. Here we will analyze the possibilities of this seemingly wrong move that Reze made to poor old lovestruck Denji. Although we got sucked into the moment, it’s clear it was strictly a power move with cold and calculated intent to kill.
In What Chapter Does Denji Meet Reze?
Denji and Reze’s whirlwind romance starts in Chapter 40. In the succeeding chapters, we saw them hit it hard, taking time to see each other, going on dates, taking a dip in the school pool with the culmination of watching fireworks on top of the hill and kissing each other in Chapter 44. I bet we were all rooting for Denji, hoping this would start his life turning around for the better. In a way, everyone wishes to find someone they would fall in love with, and we thought this was it for our boy Denji. But we were wrong; we were all so wrong.
Why Did Reze Bite Denji’s Tongue Off?
Now we come to the scene deconstruction. I have tried to find any semblance of an explanation as to why Tatsuki Fujimoto included this scene in the story. But we never got one which is also a kindness. My mentor always says, “In writing a story, it’s best to show than to tell.” And here is my take on this scene.
SPOILER ALERT!!! First, we have to remember what Reze is. Reze is a military-trained killer from the Soviet Union, and she never makes a move that’s not part of her plan. That being said, she is an assassin that probably kills in the shadows. Killers know a great deal of knowledge on how to minimize presence and visibility while taking out their mark with ease.
So, why did Reze bite off Denji’s tongue?
Reze removed Denji’s ability to create sound, preventing anyone from noticing what was happening. We know this because after she takes out Denji’s tongue, the central part responsible for verbal communication, she slices his throat completely, removing his ability to scream. At the same time, these locations hold a vast majority of blood vessels and veins, which also drains the blood from the victim, completely incapacitating them: such brutal and elegant precision from no less than the resident killer – Reze, the Bomb Devil.
