How Old is Makima?
On the surface, Makima is a beautiful woman who happens to be in her mid to late twenties. It is unclear whether she is around 20 years old because the author does not mention Makima’s age.
However, since devils in Chainsaw Man are born when humanity is afraid of something, the Control Devil itself has probably been around for hundreds of thousands of years since the existence of humanity.
Makima is the latest incarnation of the Control Devil and has been around for 50-60 years at the start of the events of Chainsaw Man. This is because she clearly remembers the events of World War II in Chapter 84 after Denji erased its existence alongside every major crisis humanity has ever faced.
Who is Makima in Chainsaw Man?
Makima is a high-ranking Public Safety Devil Hunter in charge of Special Divisions 4 and 5. Makima typically sports a typical Devil Hunter attire, a black business coat with a white dress shirt underneath accompanied by a black tie. In her more casual clothes, she wears a white jacket underneath a black dress accompanied by black stockings and high-heeled shoes.
She has bright red hair, usually kept in a loose braid, with bangs and two longer bangs that define her face. Her eyes are a golden tint with multiple rings inside her pupils, a signature trademark of the Control Devil.
Is Makima a Devil or Human?
At first, Makima is shown to be a human that is capable of feeling human emotions, and she projects herself as a tough leader dedicated to her job but sometimes lets her humanity peek through.
Denji, the main protagonist, even commented that Makima acts like a love interest towards him and is shown to reciprocate his feelings, cheering him up when he feels down and offering sexual intimacy.
As time passes, Makima eventually reveals her deceitful and emotionless side. Hell-bent on portraying herself as the savior of humanity. She has no hesitation in lying and manipulating her subordinates to get what she wants and is shown to be willing to start a world war to control the Gun Devil.
In Chapter 75, Makima was revealed to be an ancient, omniscient being called the Control Devil, which embodied the fear of control or domination. This decision made her the main antagonist of the Public Safety Saga.
Can Makima Be Revived?
As a devil, Makima possesses a great deal of physical strength and has enhanced durability. Due to her contract with the Prime Minister of Japan, she cannot take damage or even die because her agreement states that any damage taken by her will be transferred as a proportionate illness or condition to a random citizen in Japan.
If she finds herself in a situation where she can take damage and die, she is also capable of reincarnating into an endless cycle of death and rebirth thanks to her devil lineage. After Denji defeated her, her soul returned to hell and was spontaneously reincarnated in China as a young girl named Nayuta due to her innate ability.
