Makima is one of the main characters in the hit manga series Chainsaw Man by Tatsuki Fujimoto. She was first introduced as a high-ranking public safety devil hunter and the head of Tokyo Special Division 4.
At first, she is shown to be a kind and friendly senior to Denji—the series’ main protagonist. However, as the story progresses, it is eventually revealed that under the kind facade lies a ruthless and manipulative person whose only goal is to take control of the Chainsaw Devil residing in Denji’s body. Makima is determined to achieve this ultimate goal even at the expense of other people’s lives.
What makes Makima such a strong and fearsome character is her ability to control literally anyone. Humans, fiends, and devils alike tremble at her mere presence. In fact, the President of the United States claimed that all other countries aside from the US already refused to fight against her. And honestly, you can’t blame them.
Makima’s ability to control all inferior life forms makes her almost invincible. And yes, we literally mean ALL life forms, may it be an animal, human, or devil. What’s interesting is that even without an actual contract, Makima’s ability allows her to command other devils by simply controlling the person that they are contracted with. Plus, she won’t have to pay the price.
For such a cunning person like Makima, this strong and convenient ability is just another tool for taking advantage of those who are below her. Most of the time, she uses this ability to manipulate and force people to make a contract with her. As a result, it is not surprising that Makima has a long list of people that she is contracted with.
Who is Makima Contracted With?
Makima is contracted with the Prime Minister of Japan, Aki Hayakawa, and several unnamed devil hunters.
Prime Minister of Japan
Her contract with the Prime Minister is proved to be the most useful one as it basically grants her immortality in the battlefield. According to the agreement, any life-threatening damages inflicted on Makima will be transferred to a random Japanese citizen in the form of an illness. In exchange, she will work for the government. This is the reason why she is considered as one of the most powerful characters in the series. Even if she gets killed, she will only resurrect in hell and get reincarnated as another person.
Aki Hayakawa
In Chapter 74, Makima’s identity as the Control Devil was finally revealed when she initiated a contract to a desperate Aki. At the time, Aki sought Makima’s advice and told her about his strong urge to change the future and protect his friends. He even went as far as saying that he is willing to make any contract with any devil that would grant him the strength to do so. Seeing Aki’s helplessness and desperation, Makima took the opportunity and used her ability to force him into accepting her contract.
Since Makima is known for manipulating people to make them do her bidding, it’s not surprising that she is also contracted with a lot of unnamed devil hunters who were not explicitly showed in the manga.
What Devil is Makima Contracted With?
At the beginning of the series, Makima was introduced as a normal public safety devil hunter. It is common knowledge that every devil hunter makes a contract with a certain devil that would lend them strength in battle.
Although Makima’s character has always been shrouded with mystery, she was even more suspicious because she refuses to disclose the devil that she’s contracted with.
Later on, it was revealed that Makima doesn’t have any contract with any devil since she is the Control Devil herself.
Although she is not directly contracted with other devils, Makima can borrow the supernatural abilities of other devils by controlling the person it is contracted with. This was demonstrated in Chapter 66 when Makima used Hell Devil’s ability through a dead person and transported everyone back to their original location.
Did Denji Make a Contract with Makima?
Thankfully, the answer is no. Denji never made a contract with Makima, and for some unknown reason, Makima can’t use her ability to control Denji and force him to do it. Remember that in order for Makima to use her control ability, the person must be someone that she perceives as inferior. Some fans speculate that maybe Makima can’t control Denji because she doesn’t see him as someone below her; after all, the Chainsaw Devil that she admires with all her heart is currently inside Denji’s body.
Did Power Make a Contract with Denji?
Yes, Power made a contract with Denji in Chapter 91 of the manga. When Denji was on the verge of death after shielding Kobeni and receiving a fatal blow, Power ran to his rescue and offered her blood so Denji could gain back his strength. In exchange, Denji must find the reincarnated Blood Devil, befriend it, and make sure it turns back into the same person as Power.
Even though their relationship didn’t get off to a good start, this act of sacrifice just proved how much Power valued Denji as a friend. She even mentioned that Denji was her very first friend, and that’s why she wanted him to live.
What was the Contract Aki Made with Makima?
When Aki asked Makima for advice in Chapter 74, he initially said that he was willing to make any contract with any devil that would give him the strength that he needed to change the future and protect his friends. After that, Makima used her ability and forced Aki to form a contract with her. Unfortunately, the terms of that contract do not include Aki’s original wish.
“If you give me all of you, I’ll give you strength.” These were Makima’s exact words when she ordered Aki to make a contract with her.
Since Aki was under Makima’s control at that time, he unconsciously agreed to the contract without knowing that it was unfair and disadvantageous for him. In the end, Aki was the only one who suffered while Makima got exactly what she wanted—to break Denji by compelling him to kill his own friend who turned into a Gun fiend.
Who Has a Contract with the Gun Devil?
The President of the United States is the one who formed a contract with the Gun Devil. According to the agreement, the Gun Devil must kill Makima in exchange for one year from the lifespan of every single US citizen. However, the Gun Devil part that the US possessed during that time is only at twenty percent of its actual power. Unfortunately, it was not enough to take down Makima. In the end, the Gun Devil was the one defeated by Makima, and it possessed Aki’s corpse which turned him into a Gun fiend.
