Megumi is one of the characters in Jujutsu Kaisen with a very intriguing and complex past. Although he was born outside of the Zenin Clan, he was lucky enough to inherit the family’s legendary Ten Shadows Technique.
So, how did it happen? It’s all thanks to his father who came from the Zenin bloodline. Anime-onlys may ask, “Who is the father of Megumi?” but it’s only a matter of time before he finally appears in the second season.
But if you can’t wait to find out more about Megumi’s father, then continue reading to your heart’s content as long as you don’t mind major manga spoilers.
Who is the Father of Megumi?
Megumi’s father is Toji Fushiguro, a non-curse user known as the Sorcerer Killer. He was first introduced in Chapter 66 during the Hidden Inventory Arc. He is a notorious assassin hired by the Time Vessel Association to assassinate the Star Plasma Vessel Riko Amanai.
Toji was originally born into the Zenin Clan without cursed energy. As a clan that values cursed techniques more than anything else, Toji was treated like an outcast and suffered horribly under the Zenin Clan. Eventually, he left the clan and married Megumi’s mother, taking her last name Fushiguro.
Sadly, Megumi’s mother died right after he was born. Later on, Toji married another woman who happened to be Tsumiki’s mother. Toji and Tsumiki’s mother vanished after that, leaving behind Megumi and Tsumiki.
It was also revealed that Toji sold Megumi off to the Zenin Clan, but Gojo intervened and took him to Jujutsu High instead.
What Happened to Toji Fushiguro?
Hidden Inventory Arc
Despite having zero cursed energy, Toji is surprisingly one of the very few people who managed to inflict a great deal of damage on Gojo Satoru. In fact, he almost killed the world’s strongest jujutsu sorcerer during the Hidden Inventory Arc.
In Chapter 65, Gojo and Suguru were sent on a mission to escort the Star Plasma Vessel to merge with Master Tengen. However, the Time Vessel Association was against this idea. That’s when they hired Toji and ordered him to assassinate the Star Plasma Vessel.
Toji’s initial plan was to wear out Gojo by making multiple sorcerers attack him first. As soon as Gojo lets his guard down and deactivates the Infinity to recover from consecutive attacks, Toji slipped in and stabbed him from behind. Even Gojo was surprised by Toji’s sudden attack; he failed to sense his presence since Toji doesn’t have a cursed energy. (Who knew that not having cursed energy also has its advantages?)
Still, Gojo won’t be defeated that easily. He was able to survive Toji’s fatal attack thanks to the Reverse Cursed Technique that he used to heal himself.
Toji and Gojo’s one-on-one battle did not last for long. As soon as Gojo recovered from Toji’s surprise attack, he was able to eliminate him right away with just one blow. On the verge of death, Toji finally realized how much of a monster this Gojo Satoru is.
Despite being defeated in the end, Toji’s effort is no doubt worth acknowledging. Even without cursed energy, his careful planning and tactical intellect allowed him to catch Gojo by surprise. His innate physical prowess, speed, and reflexes are no joke. Even Gojo himself had a hard time reading his moves. The fact that Toji almost killed the strongest jujutsu sorcerer already makes him such a worthwhile opponent.
Shibuya Incident Arc
Surprisingly, Toji makes another appearance during the Shibuya incident. Through the Séance Technique, his soul was summoned by Granny Ogami to attack Yuji, Megumi, and Takuma. He was ordered to go on a rampage and strike anything and anyone before him. However, Toji was able to gain control of his own body much to Ogami’s surprise.
Since Toji refused to continue being used as a weapon, he ended up stabbing himself and returning to death. Many readers were moved by this act of sacrifice as it was interpreted as Toji’s way of protecting Megumi. Toji chose to kill himself rather than to further endanger his son’s life by becoming Ogami’s pawn. Toji’s last words can also be interpreted as him being relieved that Megumi uses the last name Fushiguro instead of Zenin.
The funny thing is when Megumi saw Toji’s reincarnation, he didn’t recognize him at all, and instead, his initial reaction was “who the hell is this guy?!”
Does Megumi Know Gojo Killed His Father?
The answer is no, and he probably doesn’t care. In Chapter 79, Gojo meets young Megumi for the first time and he was supposed to tell him about Toji’s death. However, Megumi quickly cut him off and told him that he doesn’t care where his father is or what he is doing. Megumi also added that he hadn’t seen his father in years and that he doesn’t even remember what he looks like.
Despite Megumi’s dismissal of Toji’s whereabouts, Gojo still told him that he is willing to answer his questions if ever he gets curious about his father.
Did Gojo Raise Megumi?
Megumi was in first grade when Gojo first met him, so yes, Gojo practically raised him.
Remember that Toji initially sold Megumi to the Zenin Clan, however, it didn’t really happen since Gojo took him to Jujutsu High before the Zenin Clan could even acquire Megumi.
Megumi trained as a sorcerer at Tokyo Jujutsu High and in return, Gojo provided them with financial aid, making him their benefactor. That’s how Megumi and Tsumiki were able to survive despite being abandoned by both of their parents at such a young age.
